Mobile Telephone Networks Explained
SingTel Optus Pty Limited is the second largest mobile carrier in Australia with around 22.7% market share. The Optus OPEN Network covers 97% of the population, offers the second fastest internet speeds and also comes in second in the coverage stakes.
Optus currently has LTE in selected areas of Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide CBD. Optus recently purchased VividWireless and plan to operate their 4G network on both 1800Mhz and 2.3 Ghz. In May 2013 Optus purchased spectrum in the 700 MHz and 2600 MHz band for future 4G use. This will be used once licenses are issued in 2015.
Optus plans to shut down their GSM network from April 2017.
