VoLTE (Voice Over LTE)

What is VoLTE?

Standing for Voice Over LTE, VoLTE is a standard developed to enable voice communication to go over the 4G/LTE network.

Traditionally on 3G voice is sent via a circuit switched network. Unfortunately LTE uses a packet switched network making in incompatble and the need for a new technology for voice resulted in VoLTE being adopted as the new standard.

Without VoLTE, those on the 4G network will notice their phone dropping back to 3G to place the call.

Benefits of VoLTE to Consumers

There are several benefits to customers in using VoLTE:

  • High Definition Voice Quality - a noticeably improved voice quality difference by increasing the data rate from 6-12kbps up to 23 kbps
  • Quick Call Establishment - the time it takes from when the call is placed to when the phone rings will be decreased by nearly half with VoLTE.
  • Increased Battery Life - when compared to using other VoIP services like Skype, Viber, WhatsApp. Also batteries can be drained from having to switch between networks and poor signal.
  • Rich Communication Services - the ability to offer communication expereinces beyong voice and SMS over LTE. These include video chat, instant chat, group chat, file sharing, location sharing and screen sharing during a call. Telstra offer 5-way group chat.
  • High Speed Internet During a Call - your phone will remain on 4G during the call so you still get fast internet if required.

VoLTE in Australia

With the carriers now buying up more spectrum and refarming GSM bands for 4G use, they now want to push more people onto their 4G network. One way to do this is to provide voice services on 4G.

Telstra - already have VoLTE rolled out for most customers and in a large number of areas.

Optus - are in the test phase and due to roll out in 2016.

Vodafone - commenced roll out of VoLTE starting in December 2015, initially in parts of Queensland prior to a wider rollout throughout 2016, starting with postpaid services on selected plans.
